I LOVE PU-ER TEA (普洱茶) !!
I've always told my family how I really like the taste of the tea we get served in Chinese restaurants, but I never knew what it was called... Until recently.
My Family and I were in a restaurant in Hong Kong and the waiter asked "What tea would you like to drink?"
"Pu-er" My grandmother replied. Then my eyes lit up with happiness! (I wonder why I just never asked...)
My hometown, being a small town, had no Chinese or any Asian supermarkets nearby but now, being in Manchester, I have easy access to Chinese supermarkets!
This container full of tea cost me £3.30. Initially, I thought that it was pretty expensive and having other items to purchase as well, I had to keep count of how much I was spending as I had very limited cash on me (I'm a card carrying kind of gal ;P) and the supermarket only takes cash. (Are all Asian supermarkets like that?!)
Anyway, I now realized that the tea will last for a few months so it's worth the value.
It comes in the form of loose tea leaves but correct me if I'm wrong, it should also come in tea bags too. (Although I haven't come across it yet...)
It's so simple- you pour hot water over your leaves and let it stand for five minutes.
Pu-er has a more subtle taste than a lot of teas. Even when you steep it for 10 minutes, it won't taste super strong (you'll just get cold tea xD). It has a sort of ... Well, as it seems to be described a lot as an 'earthy' taste. Apparently, not many people enjoy the taste of it but I think it's honestly the best tasting tea out there! (let me know in the comments below if you've tried it >.<)... This tea has said to be the best type if you're going to eat dim sum because it fits the palette well and it helps with digestion, which seems legit since dim sum is such oily food, so if you're put and about having dim sum ask for some Pur-er tea! Or if you want to show off your Cantonese then 普 (bow) 洱 (lay) 茶 (cha). I believe in mandarin it is actually the way they've translated it already 普 (puh) 洱 (er) 茶 (cha).
With a bit of research, I have found that this tea has many health benefits including:
-lowers cholesterol
-cleans the blood
-helps regulate digestive system
-lower blood pressure
-increase metabolism (aiding in weight loss)
- anti-inflammatory
Oh... You can apparently buy it at holland and Barrett ... Why did I not know this earlier?! T.T
It's £2.99 at Holland&Barrett
So why not give it a try!
